Portrait of Madame Bessières (ca. 1814)

Robert Lefèvre: Portrait of Madame Bessières, Wife of Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bessières

The lady's husband, Marshal Bessières, saw a lot of action during the Napoleonic Wars.

  1. Are you quite certain this is by Lefèvre? It has none of the typical rigidity of that artist's work. It looks very much like being from the hand of Baron Gérard - the pose, the setting, the lighting - or maybe even a copy after Gérard. Very interesting if it was by Lefèvre; a bit of "taking a leaf" from the competition.

    1. "Certain" is a big word, but unless all sources I've seen on the Internet are wrong (and I must admit this is possible), it is by Lefèvre.
